Improving your Vocabulary

Do you want to vary your vocabulary, lengthen your lexicon or use more whizzy words?

We all know that using 'ambitious' vocabulary is a key factor in improving your writing. Apart from reading widely (and using a dictionary to look up unfamiliar words you stumble across), there are some other things you can do to improve your vocabulary.

1. Play some games.

One of my favourites is FreeRice. Not only does it help to expand your vocabulary, but it also provides free rice for hungry people through the World Food Programme. For every 1 question that you get right, they donate 10 grains of rice. It soon adds up to a bowlful. Freerice Website

Another one, that I've just discovered, is called Knoword. No free rice, and it can be quite difficult, but I like the way it really makes you think about the definition of the word. Give it a go if you fancy a challenge and let me know how you get on. Knoword website
